Since qualifying as a Psychologist, I have continued to be engaged in workshops, training and supervision as an Emotion Focused Therapist. This professional development was completed through the Australian Institute of Emotion Focused Therapy AIEFT<\/a>. I have obtained accreditation that is internationally recognised for this mode of therapy.<\/p>\n I have been working with young people for many years and have noticed that there are a lot of different and complex challenges facing young people today than even 10 years ago. I am a parent myself (although my children are all adults now) and understand the issues that parents often face as their children transition into adulthood.<\/p>\n When I work with young people, they are primarily my client and I will maintain their confidentiality and privacy unless they request that I share their information with their family, carers, school etc. Parents can still let me know <\/span>their<\/span> concerns or any information they feel I would need to know to assist in counselling sessions.<\/span> I will, of course, inform parents or carers if I am concerned of serious risks to a young person\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n I am happy to work with families or invite parents or carers to have some joint sessions with the young person. Parents are welcome to attend<\/span> the initial part of the first session if the young person is happy for this to occur. Parents and carers often bring some context and different perspectives on an issue which can be helpful in the initial assessment or counselling process. However, <\/span>I believe it is important that the young person has the sense of having autonomy when it comes to what goals they have for counselling and what issues they would like to discuss.<\/p>\n My only agenda is to help clients on their journey to substance use that is consistent with the lifestyle and values that they are aiming for. I will however, be honest and \u2018straight forward\u2019 in discussing these issues and perhaps challenging the clients respectfully when I feel it is required.<\/p>\n When substance use becomes problematic it is not always easy to \u2018just stop\u2019 there are many factors involved. Dependence on a drug will involve physical, psychological, social, emotional factors as well as habits and routines that are hard to break.<\/p>\n Often there are underlying issues that create a problematic relationship with alcohol or other drugs. During counselling the underlying issues can be addressed, therefore making it easier to regain control of reducing your use or giving up altogether<\/span>, according to what your goals may be.<\/p>\n I am also a \u2018Quit\u2019 educator and am happy to assist clients who aim to give up smoking tobacco.<\/p>\n Rachel Meadows<\/a> of M-Ocean Psychology<\/a> is an experienced counsellor who has worked for many years with youth and adults in mental health and with people with alcohol and other drug issues.<\/p>\n Individual sessions (50 minutes) are $200<\/span>.00.<\/p>\n Clients who have a current mental health plan from their GP will receive a Medicare rebate of\u00a0$92.90<\/b>.
